I don't think I did a very good job, so I am going to try again, taking some cues from William Blattner's excellent reader's guide on Being and Time. In their Davos debate, Cassirer and The book will be of most benefit to readers steeped in philosophy and with an interest in philosophical questions, particularly as derived from Kant. Many popular books have been written on Zen since Watts' time, but few have been able to muster the rare combination of erudition and clarity that have kept The Way of Zen in readers' hands decade after decade. If I understand Heidegger right, self-consciousness, intentionality, and all those phenomena of modern philosophy are, if anything at all, residual and derivative from the more basic familiarity with the world.
